1972 Two Cent

The Type I two cent was issued from 1966 to 1984 with an additional proof striking in silver in 2006 as part of the 40th anniversary of decimal coinage set. It features Stuart Devlin's iconic frilled neck lizard design on the reverse, and the Arnold Machin effigy of her majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, on the obverse. The initials of Stuart Devlin (SD) can be found beneath the lizard on all pieces except for a number of 'Sans SD' pieces issued in 1967, 1968, and 1981 (an example is shown below).

In 1966 this type was minted in Canberra, Melbourne, and Perth. To distinguish between these mints one must look closely at the front feet of the frilled neck lizard. If the right most claw of the front right foot is blunted then the coin was minted in Perth. If the second claw from the right on the left foot is blunted then the coin was minted in Melbourne. If there are no blunted claws then the coin was minted in Canberra.
